Artist Profile | Sue ware features a powerful presence, characterised by small but heavy pieces made from white porcelain. By honouring traditional methods that utilise local soil and baking in an anagama kiln, artisans can enhance the soil's inherent strength.

Yoshiyuki Shimizu was born in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island. At 24, he began studying pottery at Kyoto Prefectural University and later trained with Masami Maruta, a renowned ceramist from Kuromuta, Saga. He also studied under Atsuya Hamada, the third son of Shoji Hamada, who was designated a Living National Treasure in 1980.

Shimizu eventually established his own independent kiln, building it in 2008 on a hillside behind his home, harmonising with the lush green landscape and neighbouring tea fields. He explores traditional ceramics through various methods, reconstructing their charm from his unique perspective. Currently, he is based in Minamiyamashiro Village in southern Kyoto Prefecture.
